the bottom line is that the 2stroke cylinders take longer to make a complete revolution before reaching top dead center (tdc). this is attributed to the full down stroke effect of the exhaust port, the expanding piston effect, the expansion of the exhaust port, and the cold high pressure exhaust gasses that need to be brought back into the exhaust system.
a shorter exhaust port means the exhaust gasses cannot “ride” into the cylinder early in the engine rotation cycle. this then limits the volume of the cylinder and the breathing capacity resulting in performance penalty. this is why 2 stroke race engines that use short exhaust ports, have weak breaths, and are over tuned for the track.
for that reason, a simulator needs to consider the top notch racing performance. for example, in a late model motorcycle, it is very unlikely that a half mile/hr is what the program is requiring. a lot of the low end power is due to the squeezing of the combustion chamber. this is addressed by a longer exhaust port. however, an excessive long exhaust port will result in the too late timing of the exhaust which will decrease the breathing capacity.

because of the opening and closing of the exhaust port, we will want to make sure that it is done at the proper time in the engine cycle to keep the breathing effect constant. remember, the intake port duration is also controlled by the same logic. if the timing is off the breathing effect will change and the engine performance will be affected. for example, if the timing is too early (less than half way through the exhaust port opening) the breathing effect will be positive instead of negative. if the timing is too late (after half way through the exhaust port opening), the breathing effect will be negative instead of positive. so, timing needs to be constantly monitored.
