WB’s strategy to stop the Batman v. Superman juggernaut came through a few weeks ago when they pulled the film from its earlier date of March 25th. Warner Bros. had planned to open Batman v Superman against Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast (March 17) to capture younger moviegoers with the dark superhero in a live-action feature. But it became clear that their original plan was headed for trouble when the movie took in a paltry $17.4 million in its fourth weekend of release. The studio scrambled to move the film to May 6th in an attempt to attract an older crowd with the superheroes and their vehicles on display. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. made a major change to the Batman v. Superman marketing strategy by having Bruce Wayne end the movie with an intense speech to the people of Metropolis. In the film’s three trailers, Wayne announces his plan to bring down Batman and Superman by holding their world hostage. Given the worldwide sympathy for Syrian refugees, this couldn’t have come at a better time.

Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice offers a disappointing villain. Ben Affleck’s batsuit/cowl feels heavy and bulky, weighing on his movements, and Christian Bale’s Batman suit, with its sleek, angular lines, performs choreographically as expected. There’s one tiny issue: Batman’s voice is deeper than it should be. Batman’s voice should have an edge to it, like Christian Bale’s, but it sounds thin and synthetic, something that comes from using software to lower the timbre of Bale’s voice in Dark Knight Rises. The disorienting effect caused Batman’s voice to fade into the background as he deals with opponents like Superman, Doomsday and the Joker. There’s also some awkward edits in the action scenes of the movie. For example, when Superman appears at the end of the movie, he appears out of nowhere, fighting Batman, who’s fighting Superman, in a cave. (Don’t worry, there’s plenty more in which we’ll see all the DC super heroes working together like good friends — Supergirl, Aquaman, the Flash, Cyborg Superman, etc.)
