another evolution in balamalari is the use of different techniques to tune the balamalari. because of the balamalari’s capacity to produce a rich variety of high-pitched tones, most balamalari are tuned using the bozuk dzeni tuning, giving a warm, mellow timbre to the instrument. the traditional, düdügün dzeni, a tuning traditionally used in the düdügün konküzi, produces a bright, treble-like sound, and is used by a minority of balamalari makers. the tuning developed by erdal erzincan, used in the accompanying video, produces a bright, treble sound. erdal erzincan also developed a new metodu for the balamalari – the nail düdükü (nail tuning). this tuning uses the bozuk dzeni tuning as its main base, but with a significant difference: the düdügün dzeni consists of seven strings, whereas the nail düdükü consists of three strings. erdal erzincan further developed this tuning, creating a nail düdükü with nine strings, using the main bozuk dzeni tuning as the base but with a different tuning of the düdügün dzeni strings and consequently also of the nail düdükü strings (see accompanying video of erdal erzincan).

Although the improvement of the baglama metodu has taken the mid-1980s, the purist tradition of the preceding 100 years kept its specific aspects and these are also practiced by musicians of all kind of balama types and in an orchestra setting. The influence of the recent development is difficult to assess. First there is the evidence that the Karadeniz tradition has kept its essential aspects, namely the unique hybrid genre, the balamacisi, this aspect is mostly expressed in the narrow neck which is a witness to the fact that the instrument has roots in the late Middle Ages, and the balamade or bilaz kurmak breathing technique, which during the last decades has been practiced only by the rare purist tradition musicians. Also, the use of the zeni döner strings has been preserved in the balamancisi to fix the tuning of the instrument (FIGURE 6).
